Note the time and exact message on the screen. Check whether it happens in one place or across the shop. Plan tests around service, and keep customer card details out of support messages. Little Fight NYC can check the Wi-Fi and power around the reader.
Check this first
- Note the time, the place in the shop, and the exact message on the reader or app.
- Check the reader’s battery and charging cable.
- Check that the phone or tablet running the payment app is on the right Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection.
- Move closer to the router or charging base and run a test outside service hours.
- Check the payment provider’s status page for an outage.
Specific fixes
During service
- Check whether one device or every device is affected.
- On a phone with Wi-Fi off, open a website on cellular data, then try the same site on the shop Wi-Fi. If it works on cellular but not on the Wi-Fi, the problem is the shop’s connection. For a payment outage, check the provider’s status page.
- Use the business’s approved fallback, such as a second reader or offline mode, rather than changing settings mid-service.
After service
- Write down what failed, when, and on which device, leaving out customer card details.
- If you took offline payments, get that device back online as soon as you can so they upload. Until they go through, do not sign out of the payment app, delete it, or factory reset the device or reader, or they can be lost for good. Read your provider’s offline rules before you rely on them: with Square, payments not uploaded within 72 hours expire, and the business covers any that are declined.
When to bring in help
- Readers drop in one area of the shop but not in others.
- The problem started after a Wi-Fi or router change.
- Readers share a network with guest Wi-Fi.
What Little Fight checks
We check the reader’s connection and power, the device running the payment app, and the network it uses. We plan tests around service and keep card details out of support messages. If the payment provider needs to act, we tell you what to report.
Related questions
Should card readers use the guest Wi-Fi?
No. Keep card readers on the staff network, apart from guest devices, and follow your payment provider’s network guidance. Little Fight NYC separates staff, guest, and payment devices on small business networks.
What is the fallback if the reader fails during service?
Check whether your payment provider supports offline payments or a phone-based reader, and learn the limits before you need them. Little Fight NYC can help test the backup plan before a busy service.
