If a computer works through a cable but not through Wi-Fi, focus on the local network. If both fail, check the provider status and the internet equipment before changing settings. If the cause is still unclear, Little Fight NYC can help separate a provider problem from the local network.
Check this first
- Check whether every device has lost the internet, or only some.
- Plug a laptop into the router with a network cable and try a website.
- Look at the modem lights and compare them with the provider’s guide.
- Check the provider’s outage page or app from a phone on cellular data.
- Restart by unplugging the power, not by pressing Reset, which can erase the Wi-Fi name and password. Unplug the router, then the modem, and wait 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in and wait for its lights to stop blinking, then plug in the router. If one box does both jobs, unplug just that box. Card readers and phones drop off for a few minutes, so if the internet is only slow, wait until after hours.
Specific fixes
On the computer
- On Windows 11, Settings > Network & internet shows whether the computer reaches the internet or only the local network.
- On a Mac, System Settings > Network shows whether Wi-Fi and Ethernet are connected.
At the modem
- Note the status lights before restarting anything, so you can tell the provider what you saw.
- Run a speed test from a wired computer while the problem is happening, and keep the result for the provider.
When to bring in help
- A cable works but Wi-Fi does not, and restarting does not help.
- The connection drops at about the same time every day.
- The provider says the line is fine, but the problem continues.
What Little Fight checks
We test the provider connection, the router, and the Wi-Fi separately, so the fix goes to the right place. If the provider needs to act, we tell you what to ask for and which results to share. If the problem is inside the office, we explain the cause and the options before changing equipment.
Related questions
Why does restarting the router help for a while?
A restart clears temporary faults, but it can hide a pattern. If you restart often, note the time and what was happening. That record helps find an overheating device, a failing cable, or a provider problem. Little Fight NYC troubleshoots internet and Wi-Fi drops for New York small businesses.
Should we buy a faster internet plan?
Not until you know where the slowdown is. A faster plan will not fix weak Wi-Fi in a back room or a router that keeps dropping connections. Little Fight NYC can test where the slowdown is before you change plans.
