The name alone is not enough: the router must keep the two networks apart. At Little Fight NYC, we can check its settings and how your staff devices and card readers connect before making a change.
Check this first
- List what connects to the business network: computers, printers, card readers, cameras, and phones.
- Check whether guests join the same network name as those devices.
- Look in the router settings for a guest network or a setting that keeps guest devices apart.
- Use a different password for guests and change it on a schedule you can keep.
- Test from a guest phone that it can browse the web but cannot see the printer or shared files.
Specific fixes
In the router settings
- Turn on the guest network and keep guests off your local network. Routers name this differently: look for a guest setting such as Allow guests to access my local network or Access Intranet, and make sure it is off.
- Client or AP isolation is a different setting: it stops wireless devices from talking to each other. On some routers it covers every wireless device, so turning it on for the staff network can cut computers and payment devices off from their printers.
- Keep payment devices and staff computers on the staff network, with a different password.
When to bring in help
- Guests can see your printers, speakers, or shared folders.
- Card readers or staff computers share a network with the public.
- The router has no guest option or the settings are unclear.
What Little Fight checks
We check how the router separates guest and staff traffic, which devices sit on each network, and whether card readers and printers still work after the change. We plan the change around business hours and leave a note of the network names and who can manage them.
Related questions
Is a separate network name enough?
No. The router has to keep the guest network apart from the staff network. Some routers create a second name that still shares access, so test what a guest device can reach. Little Fight NYC can run that test with you.
Will a guest network slow down our work?
Guests share the same internet connection. Many routers can limit guest speed so a busy room does not crowd out payments and calls. Little Fight NYC sets up business and guest Wi-Fi for New York shops, offices, and restaurants.
