Listen to the voicemail, leave a test message, and confirm who gets it. Check the after-hours path too. At Little Fight NYC, we can help test the number and make sure customers have a clear way to reach you.

Check this first

  1. Call the number from a mobile phone and from another line if you have one.
  2. Let it ring out and listen to the voicemail greeting.
  3. Leave a test message and confirm who receives it and how.
  4. If customers will text the number, text it from your mobile, then reply from the business line and check that the reply reaches your mobile.
  5. Test calls after hours and on weekends against the hours you publish.

Specific fixes

Business texting

  1. In the United States, carriers block texts a business sends from a local number through a business phone service or texting app unless the number is registered. This is called 10DLC registration. Toll-free numbers need their own verification before they can send texts. Ask your provider whether your number is registered or verified before you invite customers to text it.

Listings

  1. Use the same main number on your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect, which runs your Apple Maps listing) and Yelp.

When to bring in help

  • Calls ring the wrong phone or go straight to voicemail.
  • Texts to the business number never arrive.
  • Voicemails land in an inbox no one checks.

What Little Fight checks

We test the number the way a customer would, then check the call routing, voicemail, and after-hours path. We compare the number on your website, Google Business Profile, and listings with the one that rings, and list any that differ. You get a note of where calls go and who manages the phone account.

Related questions

Why does a business number not receive texts?

Some phone services do not turn on texting by default, and business texting in the United States can require registration. Ask the provider whether texts are enabled and what they need from you. Little Fight NYC helps small businesses set up and test business phone numbers and texting.

Should the website number match our Google listing?

Yes. Use one main number everywhere customers find you. Different numbers on different sites can confuse customers and search results. Little Fight NYC checks that your number matches across your website and Google Business Profile.
